Kohler standby generators, installed and serviced by a Platinum Dealer

Kohler air-cooled home standby generator, three-quarter view

Why we lead with Kohler

American Generator Solutions is a Kohler Platinum Dealer, which is the top tier of Kohler's dealer program. It is not a badge you buy. It reflects training, installation volume and the service record behind the units we put in.

Our technicians are Kohler-authorized and trained to Kohler's own guidelines, which matters more than it sounds. A standby generator is a small power plant bolted to the side of your house, wired into your electrical service through a transfer switch. Installed by someone who has done a hundred of them, it runs for years without you thinking about it. Installed by someone learning on your house, it becomes a service call every winter.

What a Kohler standby generator does

A standby generator sits outside your home, roughly the size and shape of a central air conditioner. It watches your incoming power. When the utility drops, it starts on its own, transfers your circuits across, and carries the house until the utility comes back. That happens within seconds, whether you are home, asleep, or three states away.

It runs on natural gas or propane, plumbed in permanently, so there is no fuel to fetch and no cans in the garage during an ice storm. It exercises itself on a schedule you set, so it is not sitting untested for a year at a time.

Sizing it to your house, not to a price sheet

The most common mistake in this business is selling a unit before anyone has looked at the house. We do it the other way round.

The assessment is a visit of about half an hour, at no charge. We list your major appliances, we open your electrical panel and look at what is actually on it, and we talk through where the generator can sit given your gas line, your meter and your property. Then you get a written quote by email, and we follow up the next day once you have had a chance to read it.

Two homes on the same street can need different units. Well pump, sump pump, electric range, a second furnace, a home office that cannot go down - each one moves the number. We will show you what whole-home coverage costs and what essential-circuits coverage costs, and let you pick.

What it costs

A home generator plus installation typically starts at around $8,000, and moves with your power needs and the installation itself. If that is higher than you expected, you are not alone - most people come in expecting under $5,000, and part of our job is explaining where the money actually goes: the unit, the transfer switch, the gas work, the electrical work, the pad, the permits.

Financing is available through EnergyPlus and the National Energy Improvement Fund if you would rather spread it out.

What we will not do

We do not install or service Generac equipment. There are more than thirty five Generac dealers in this area and they are welcome to that work. We install Kohler and Briggs & Stratton, we know those units properly, and we would rather tell you that up front than take a job we are not the right people for.

Where we install

We cover northern Indiana and parts of southwest Michigan, roughly ninety minutes from our shop in Mishawaka. That is St. Joseph, Marshall, Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Starke and Fulton counties, plus New Buffalo, Stevensville, Cassopolis, Edwardsburg and Three Rivers across the state line.
