What American Generator Solutions does

We install and service home standby generators across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, and we do the electrical work that goes with them. Gemmer Electric has been an electrical contractor since 2005; American Generator Solutions is the name we put on the generator side of that business, because most people do not think of an electrical contractor when they think about backup power.

Everything below starts the same way: a free half-hour visit to your home, a look at your panel and your appliances, and a written quote by email. No deposit to get a number, and no pressure once you have it.

The five things we do

Kohler generator installation and maintenance

We are a Kohler Platinum Dealer, which is the top tier Kohler runs. Kohler is our primary line for home standby, and we handle the whole job: sizing, permits, the pad, the transfer switch, the gas connection and startup.

Briggs and Stratton generator installation and maintenance

We are also a Briggs and Stratton Energy Solutions dealer. Having two lines matters when one has a lead time you do not want to wait out, or when a particular unit suits your house better.

Residential installation

The majority of what we do. A standby generator sits outside like an air conditioner, watches the power, and starts on its own within seconds of an outage, whether you are home or not. It runs on natural gas or propane, so there is nothing to refuel.

Generator maintenance and service

A standby generator is an engine that sits still for months and then has to start on the worst night of the year. We offer a three-year service agreement at a discounted rate, or will-call service without one. We service what we install.

Light industrial generators

Kohler has recently approved us for light industrial work. Three-phase service, motor starting loads, and deciding which circuits genuinely have to stay live are all different problems from a house, and we are set up for them.

What we do not do

We do not service Generac. There are more than thirty five Generac dealers in this area and we are not one of them, so if you have a Generac we will tell you that rather than take the job and do it badly. If you are shopping and have been told all generators are basically Generac, that is worth a conversation.

What it costs

A home generator plus installation typically starts at around $8,000. Most people expect less than that before they price it, so we would rather say the number early than surprise you at the quote. What moves it is the size of the unit, how far the electrical and gas runs are, and what your permits require. Financing is available through EnergyPlus and the National Energy Improvement Fund if you would rather spread it out.
